What is CranioSacral Therapy?
Craniosacral therapy is the gentle use of touch to affect the connective tissue and cerebrospinal fluids that surround the cranium (skull), spinal cord and the sacrum (base of spine).
Cerebrospinal fluid which nourishes this system is believed to have an energy with a subtle rhythmic pulse. Practitioners call it the 'breath of life' and often compare it to 'chi' which forms the basis of acupuncture and other forms of traditional Chinese medicine.
The aim of treatment is to restore an even pulse or rhythm that may have been disturbed through tension, illness or injury.
What are the benefits of CranioSacral therapy?
Craniosacral therapy targets many illnesses as the improvement in the function of the brain and spinal cord affects overall health. However, it is most commonly used to:
• treat back pain, sciatica & sports injuries
• alleviate depression & stress-related illnesses
• ease headaches, migraines & sinus problems
• improve digestion
• correct hormonal imbalances (PMS)
• relieve arthritis & asthma
What happens in CranioSacral therapy?
The first visit will entail a detailed case history with questions asked about your lifestyle, fitness, family medical history and emotional health.
Treatment is carried out lying down fully clothed on a couch. However, you may have to stand or walk in order to flex or release tension in particular joints. The therapist may use subtle manipulation of the head and spine and other parts of the body. There is no pulling, forcing or massage.
The effects can be wide ranging including feelings of deep relaxation or a release of tension that may result in laughter, sadness, tiredness, euphoria or a boost of energy.
Subsequent treatments may last from 30-60 minutes with the duration of treatment depending on the illness.
