What is Qigong?
Qigong (also known as Chi-Kung) is a martial art that was first introduced in 200BC by Chinese doctors. 'Qi' means energy and 'gong' means practice. It combines gentle muscle exercises, meditation, breathwork and visualisation techniques.
The benefits of Qigong
The Chinese ancients always tried to work in conjunction with natural energy flow to regulate the functioning of their bodies. The exercises, meditation, breathwork and visualisation help to:
• reduce heart rate, blood pressure and cholesterol
• regulate breathing (useful for asthma & bronchitis)
• calm the nerves & stabilise mood swings
• boost the immune system & circulation
• improve posture, balance, strength & flexibility
• eliminate toxins & regulate digestion
• reduce pain from injury, surgery or arthritis
• promote relaxation & inner calm
What happens in Qigong?
The exercises are similar to T'ai chi exercises and are performed in a slow, relaxed way in order to stimulate the body's 'qi' or energy flow.
Emphasis is placed on simple repetitive movements focusing the mind and coordinating the breath. More complex exercises can improve functions in the body such as heart rate and brain wave frequency.
The gentle nature of the exercises mean that Qigong is accessible to young and old alike. The exercises can be performed upright, walking, lying down or in a chair.
You may be asked to stand with your legs apart and breathe from the diaphragm whilst combining leg and arm movements. Alternatively you may be asked to sit and roll objects in the palms of your hands or simply concentrate on walking. Qigong practice can be suited to individual illness or injury.
Qigong can be learned on a one-to-one basis or as part of a group at your local gym or fitness centre. An acupuncturist may also be able to give you a referral of a qigong teacher.
