What is the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique is a way of improving your posture. It teaches you to sit, stand, bend and walk with ease, eliminating strain or tension in the body.
The Alexander Technique is a way of heightening your awareness of how you move. It is often presented as a preventative technique rather than a cure for a specific ailment.
The benefits of the Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique is used by performing artists (musicians, actors, dancers and athletes) to improve postural habits and maximise performance. However, anyone can learn how to use their body properly to:
• heighten body awareness
• promote flexible movement
• regulate breathing
• alleviate chronic pain or injury
• increase strength and vitality
• reduce stress and fatigue
• aid rehabilitation
• relieve pain in child birth
• ease gynaecological problems
• overcome repetitive strain injury (especially PC users)
What happens during an Alexander Technique session?
The Alexander Technique can be taught individually or in small groups.
Your standing, lying, walking and sitting postures will be assessed. This is done by verbal instruction and gentle hands-on guidance. The teacher will enable you recognise and release habits of tension that impede good posture and free-flowing movement.
By studied repetition, your body will be able to learn good posture. However, it does take practice! A minimum period of three months (on a weekly basis) is recommended in order to gain an understanding of how to apply the principles to your everyday life.
