What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercising designed to strengthen and stretch the muscles without adding bulk to your body.

This is achieved through a series of smooth, flowing movements in combination with proper breathwork.

Movements are performed either on a mat and/or with the aid of spring resistant equipment which tones and mobilises the body.

The benefits of Pilates

Pilates is becoming increasingly popular as a safe way to keep fit.  A stretch-based exercise, it avoids high-impact workouts and is therefore suitable for all ages and abilities.

With practice and dedication Pilates:

• builds strength without excess bulk
• creates a slender, toned body
• heightens body awareness and good posture
• increases flexibility and agility
• prevents injury and optimises sport performance
• reduces stress and tension
• strengthens the mind-body connection
• aids physical therapy and rehabilitation
• improves circulation and energy levels
• alleviates chronic back pain

What happens during a Pilates session?

Pilates training can be taught individually or as part of a group class.

Most beginners start with group mat classes which focus on the 6 fundamentals of Pilates: concentration, control, centring, fluidity, breath and position.

Exercises are centred around the abdomen to create a strong and healthy spine.  The legs, arms and buttocks will be worked to achieve a balanced, toned and flexible body.

One-to-one Pilates tuition is also available and combines an exercise programme to suit your needs.  Equipment may be used in combination with exercises and breathwork to create the right environment to achieve your personal fitness goals.
