What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a treatment that identifies abnormalities with the human structure and function.

By using a variety of manipulative techniques, it enables bones, tendons, ligaments and muscles to move & interact smoothly.

Advice on posture and exercise may be given to aid recovery and prevent recurrence of symptoms.

The benefits of osteopathy

Osteopathy is capable of treating a wide range of disorders.  However, some of the more common ailments include:

• back pain (including sciatica)
• joint pain (shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee)
• sports injuries
• backache (in pregnancy)
• asthma, arthritis, rheumatism
• stiffness
• premenstrual tension
• postural problems
• work strains
• irritable bowel syndrome

What happens during a visit to the osteopath?

A treatment will begin with a detailed case history.  This may be followed by a medical examination and may involve x-rays and blood tests.

An osteopath will relieve the strain and restore mobility by using massage and manipulation.  You will be asked to remove some of your clothing for the osteopath to perform a series of hand movements.

Osteopaths do not prescribe drugs and use invasive techniques such as surgery.

A full session can take 30 minutes to 1 hour.  Your osteopath will recommend a course of treatments.  Chronic conditions may require ongoing treatment.
