What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is part of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) health system which includes diet, exercise, herbal remedies and acupuncture.
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the skin. The needles are placed over energy channels known as meridians which are linked to organs in the body and body functions.
The needles stimulate chi or energy flow by dispersing energy blocks within the body.
The benefits of acupuncture
Acupuncture aims to stimulate the body’s own healing process and restore equilibrium both mentally and physically.
Acupuncture releases natural painkillers such as endorphins and serotonin in the brain and spinal cord which relieves pain and increases overall wellbeing.
Acupuncture has been widely used in the treatment of:
• Pain relief - back, neck, leg, dental, migraines, headaches
• Bowel & bladder problems - irritable bowel syndrome
• Menstrual & menopausal problems - menstrual cramps
• Skin & respiratory problems - rashes, ulcers, asthma
This gives you an idea of just some of the conditions that respond well to acupuncture.
What happens in an acupuncture treatment?
Typically the acupuncturist will insert fine needles into the skin. A herb called moxa (mugwort) is sometimes burned on the tip of the needle to induce heat and relieve pain. The needles may be moved manually or electronically. The number of needles inserted may vary depending on the condition.
Treatment may initially take place once a week with longer intervals as the condition improves.
